Life Legacy


John H. Kelley, Sr., 72, of Hunlock Creek and formerly of the East End Section of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at the Mercy Hospice, Mercy Hospital, Scranton.

He was born May 8, 1938 in Wilkes-Barre a son of the late William H. and Edna Mae Burridge Kelley. He attended Coughlin High School and was an Army veteran having served in Germany. Formerly he was employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot as a security guard and later served on the Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department for twenty years. He was known by his fellow firefighters as “Captain EY.”

Mr. Kelley was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Lake Silkworth and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Hackettstown, New Jersey. He enjoyed spending time outdoors while boating, fishing, and hunting. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Clarke Kelley; son, David Matthew Kelley; sister, Edna Mae Frey.

Surviving are his children, John H. Kelley, Jr. and his wife Debbie, Wilkes-Barre, Patrick J. Kelley, Sr. and his wife Janice, Wilkes-Barre, Anne Marie Zimmerman and her husband Greg, with whom he resided, Edna Ganski and her husband Bob, Collegeville; grandchildren, Patrick J. Kelley, Jr., Stephanie Michelle Kelley, Daniel M. Kelley Sr., John H. Kelley, III, Amanda P. Ganski, Sierra Kelley, Ashley Ganski, Kelley Anne Zimmerman; great grandchildren, Logan Dickson, Zander Damion Kelley, Faythe Wagner, Aaron Wagner, Daniel Matthew Kelley, Jr.; sister, Alberta Knapik, Delaware; brothers, William Kelley, Hanover Township, David Kelley, Plains; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Monday at 10:15 from E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9.
