Life Legacy


Richard Joseph (Dick) Gareis, 73, of Kingston, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre following a battle with lung cancer and other lung diseases.


He was born July 2, 1934 in Pittsburgh the son of the late Harold and Marie Abt Gareis. A 1952 graduate of Kingston High School he was employed as an auto accessories salesman with American Auto Accessories and later for A & A Auto, Wilkes-Barre from where he retired.


Dick was an avid sport fisherman for all of his adult life and was an expert at tying flies. For many years he and his close fishing companions would make annual expeditions to their favorite trout streams in Montana or Canada. He served on the board of directors for Trout Unlimited and was a very active member of the local Stanley Cooper Sr. Chapter. Dick edited the chapter's monthly newsletter as well as writing many articles on the art of sport fishing.


A member of St. Ignatius Church, Kingston he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Hummer) Carpenter Gareis; children, Robert Carpenter, Elizabeth Williams, Helen C. Swithers; brother, James C. Gareis; sister, Margaret M. Atkachunas.


Surviving are brothers, Harold A. Gareis Jr., Larksville; Charles Gareis, Manassas, Virginia; sister in law, Phyllis Gareis; daughter in law, Jan Carpenter, Tennessee; 4 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren.


The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:00 from Maher-Collins Funeral Home, 360 N. Maple Avenue, Kingston, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 in St. Ignatius Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Pringle. Friends may call Monday 6-9.
